I Love Juice Bar Franchisee Profile: Heather and Keith Harned
How a Christmas shopping trip led to franchise ownership for Nashville area husband-wife team
When Heather Harned went Christmas shopping in the Berry Hill area of Nashville in November 2014, she didn’t expect she’d discover a new business opportunity.
That’s exactly what happened, though. After choosing gifts for those on her list, she spotted an I Love Juice Bar and decided to stop for a juice, which fit in with the healthier lifestyle she and husband Keith had just adopted. “Keith and I had just changed our entire lifestyle about how we ate and how we fed our bodies,” Heather remembers. “I thought a juice would be fantastic. And so I went into I Love Juice Bar Berry Hill and I had an amazing experience, as far as customer service goes.”
On Heather’s next trip to I Love Juice Bar, she brought Keith along. Again they had an amazing customer service experience, which compelled them to begin researching the brand and business opportunities. Heather says, “We did our due diligence. I dare say we did more than most people do. I think John probably thought these people aren’t going to make a decision because we took 8 months to decide. We pulled the trigger in September of 2015 and signed our franchise agreement.” The Harneds’ Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, I Love Juice Bar franchise opened in February 2016.
Heather is unique in that she’s a third generation franchisee and was previously a McDonald’s franchise owner. Having grown up in the business with first-hand experience of the importance of branding, stellar customer service and product consistency, Heather says that I Love Juice Bar is laying a solid rock upon which to grow their company.
“I see a lot of the foundation (like you find at McDonald’s) being established in I Love Juice Bar,” Heather says. “Operations manual, roll-out guide, available support — it’s all there, and they’re growing the same type of foundation that’s in place in the big companies. Why reinvent the wheel? I can see I Love Juice Bar replicating those foundational building blocks right now.”
Heather serves as owner-operator in running the Harneds’ I Love Juice Bar franchise, while Keith takes a supporting role. He mainly comes the store on the weekend. Keith says he’s most impressed by how the corporate office helps franchisees. “There’s almost a ‘hometown’ feel to this company,” Keith says. “All you have to do is ask for help, and they are more than willing to help you or connect you with the people who can help you.”
Heather agrees. “I really appreciate that they have an ear to the owners. If you have an issue, comment, praise or a concern, all you need to do is reach out. They want to know because that’s how we’re going to grow and how we’re going to build together. I think that’s a really exciting thing about being in a young company like this.”
The Harneds signed an area development deal with I Love Juice Bar franchise, which means the Mt. Juliet store is only the first they will open. They have plans to open a location in Hendersonville (just north of Nashville) and one in the Donelson/Hermitage area. Keith and Heather aren’t ruling out other stores down the road but say they are focused now on growing their first three stores. “We have other target areas we are interested in, but we’re going to get these three rolling and then look towards that,” Keith says.
For now, they are excited to own and operate a successful business. “We continue to live what we feel like is the I Love Juice Bar lifestyle. We are very much active in our gym, our church, in our health, and we try to project that to our team and our community,” Heather says.
